Dr. Nikan Eghbali is a registered Clinical and Counselling Psychologist with the College of Psychologists and Behaviour Analysts of Ontario. His area of specialization is adult mental health, and his clinical work is built on a foundation of presence, authenticity, acceptance, collaboration, and compassion. He views each of these elements as essential for creating a strong therapeutic relationship that is capable of fostering meaningful change. Dr. Eghbali utilizes a primarily client-centered approach, prioritizing an understanding of each individual’s unique experiences, goals, and socio-cultural context in order to guide his therapeutic work.
Dr. Eghbali offers comprehensive psychotherapy and assessment, addressing a broad spectrum of mental health concerns. His expertise encompasses anxiety disorders (e.g., social, generalized, health, panic), depression, emotion dysregulation, OCD, trauma (including complex trauma), life-transitions and related adjustments, grief, relationship and career challenges, sleep disorders, ADHD/executive functioning, and personality disorders. Dr. Eghbali utilizes evidence-based and neuroscientifically informed approaches, including cognitive behavioral therapies (e.g., CBT, CPT, ACT, DBT), emotion-focused therapies, and mindfulness/compassion-based modalities.
Dr. Eghbali completed his doctoral studies in Clinical and Counselling Psychology at the University of Toronto. He has trained and worked in a variety of hospital and clinical settings including Sunnybrook Hospital (Anxiety Disorders Unit), Homewood Health Centre (Traumatic Stress Injury & Concurrent Unit; Mood and Anxiety Unit; and Assessment, Stabilization, and Comprehensive Psychiatric Care Unit), the University of Toronto’s OISE Psychology Clinic, and various psychology practices. These experiences have provided him with extensive experience working with clients from a wide range of life experiences.
Dr. Eghbali’s work is enriched by his academic research in the scholarly fields of wisdom, meaning, emotion, conflicts, and psychological growth. During his graduate studies, he researched the role of wisdom in informing the use of forgiveness and non-forgiveness in various contexts. He has also studied the role of emotion regulation in the process of managing traumatic experiences. In addition, he has examined the role of environmental factors, as well as the potential for psychological and spiritual growth, when resolving highly challenging emotional states. Drawing on his clinical and academic experiences, he is interested in assisting individuals who have struggled with marginalization and nonacceptance.
Dr. Eghbali continues to engage in regular professional development activities and is a member of the Canadian Psychological Association and the Ontario Psychological Association. Dr. Eghbali offers services in both English and Persian (Farsi).
