Dr. Andrew Hunter is a registered Clinical Psychologist with the College of Psychologists and Behaviour Analysts of Ontario. His area of specialization is adult mental health, and he is enthusiastic about harnessing the power of compassionate and collaborative curiosity in order to help people gain insight and to make tangible progress towards their goals.
Dr. Hunter begins his therapeutic work with individuals by seeking to understand people’s experiences on their own terms. He then works to collaboratively to create tailor-made case conceptualizations and treatment plans that are accurate to their lived experience. He draws on his naturally warm personality, strong listening skills, sense of humour, and creativity in order to help people shift painful patterns and to craft lives of meaning, resilience, and vitality. He is passionate about evidence-based, culturally sensitive, trauma-informed, anti-oppressive, and non-hierarchical practice. He believes that therapy should be an intentional, transparent, and empowering process.
Across a variety of treatment settings, Dr. Hunter has experience supporting people in addressing a wide range of mental health concerns and life issues. These include anxiety (e.g., generalized, social, health, panic, perfectionism), OCD and related disorders, depression, bipolar disorder, relationship difficulties (e.g., family, friends, romantic partners), identity-related concerns (e.g., questioning around sexuality and gender, career choices, existential concerns), as well as life transitions and stress (e.g., bereavement, burnout, imposter syndrome). Dr. Hunter also supports people in high pressure environments, such as executives and athletes, as they navigate the interplay between performance and well-being. He is primarily a Cognitive-Behavioural (CBT) therapist but draws on concepts and techniques from other evidence-based approaches such as Dialectical Behavioural Therapy (DBT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Emotion-Focused Therapy (EFT), Motivational Interviewing (MI), and Client-Centered Humanistic Therapy. He also offers Exposure with Response Prevention and Inference-Based Cognitive Therapy in his work with people experiencing difficulties with obsessions and compulsions.
Dr. Hunter completed his Master’s and Doctoral degrees in Clinical Psychology at York University in Toronto, and is currently in the process of completing his Master of Business Administration at the Rotman School of Management at the University of Toronto. He completed his predoctoral residency at the University of British Columbia and previously held practicum positions at the Frederick W. Thompson Anxiety Disorders Centre (Canada’s only intensive inpatient OCD unit), the York University Psychology Clinic, and Toronto Metropolitan University’s Centre for Student Development and Counselling.
In addition to his clinical work, Dr. Hunter is passionate about applying psychological principles to organizational problems. His doctoral research examined judgment and decision making and he has experience applying these insights in management consulting, helping companies enhance stakeholder well-being by integrating psychological principles into their products, services, and strategy. He has also provided workshops on mental health in the workplace, including topics related to stress management and effective communication.
Dr. Hunter continues to engage in regular professional development activities and is a member of the Canadian Psychological Association.
