Constant Negative News Getting You Down?

Scrolling through the news can feel like a rollercoaster you can’t get off. With a few simple strategies, you can stay informed without letting negativity take over your day.

Most of us consume media daily. Being informed is important, and yet it can seem that there are endless issues that can contribute to an overall sense of unease. From climate change to artificial intelligence, to wars, and to elections, to name just a few. Are you aware of how the daily dose(s) of the news impact you? If you find that that the endless news cycle is making you feel cynical, depleted, and yet also coming back for more, try these strategies to avoid the cycle of negative and daunting information that may be serving to increase your daily worry.

  1. Start by asking yourself these questions: How do I feel before, during, and after I read or watch the news? Will another article change my opinion? Do I already have the information that I need to make decisions for myself, for my friends and family, and for the good of others? Are my news sources sensational, alarming, and emotionally evocative?

  2. Monitor your usage. Set limits if needed.

  3. Remind yourself of what is in your control, and what is not.

  4. Seek out experiences that bring joy, fulfillment, laughter, and satisfaction in order to counterbalance some of the negative inputs.
